4 Legal-Adjacent Goings On To Look Forward To In 2023

new-year-7410988_1920Life’s hard without some things to look forward to, and let’s face it, we’ve had several rough years in a row here.

That being said, doesn’t something feel a little different about 2023 already? Anecdotally, the number of people willing to openly brawl with friends, loved ones, and random strangers on the bus over nonsensical political positions seems to have fallen to a recent low.

Yes, change is in the air. With this fresh new spirit of optimism in mind, here are four legal-adjacent goings on to look forward to in the New Year.

Michael Lewis Will Write About Sam Bankman-Fried

Michael Lewis, author of such finance industry favorites as “The Big Short,” “Liar’s Poker,” and “Flash Boys” spent weeks embedded with disgraced former crypto CEO Sam Bankman-Fried before the latter’s downfall. Now, Michael Lewis reportedly went so far as to meet with SBF while the former marinates on house arrest.

Some critics within the crypto world are worried that this is all part of a Bankman-Fried plot to control the narrative and continue to portray himself as a misunderstood hero. But take it from someone who knows a little something about Lewis: any book that results from these meetings is not going to paper over criminal wrongdoing or portray any of its subjects in an artificially rosy light. Which gives us all a gripping tale of a sweeping real-life scam to look forward to in 2023.

I’ve written a number of times about a (literally) groundbreaking fossil now known as the “dueling dinosaurs.” Exquisitely preserved in this specimen are a theropod and a ceratopsian from 67 million years ago seemingly locked in combat.

In the 21st century, these preserved dinosaur bones have been at the center of an explosion in the commercial fossil market, a series of Ninth Circuit appellate cases, and a whole new mineral rights law from the Montana state legislature. In 2023, following a series of delays, you’ll finally be able to see the dueling dinosaurs yourself at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Enjoy.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Arrives

Elon Musk has promised that the all-electric Tesla Cybertruck will be available in 2023. Perhaps more to the point, given Musk’s tendency to be overly optimistic, Cybertruck components and assembly line equipment were recently spotted arriving at Tesla’s Giga Texas production facility in Austin.

Even if you’re a diehard Chevy, Ford, or Dodge driver, maybe you’re still looking forward to a refresh of the Tesla product line sure to juice an important S&P 500 stock that just suffered its worst year since the company went public in 2010. Or if you have neither an interest in driving a Cybertruck nor any exposure to the stock market, well, hey, perhaps you’ll appreciate Musk having to spend a bit more of his time on something other than ruining Twitter.

We Will Gain Some Sort Of Certainty As To Donald Trump’s Criminal Fate

Hate to bring up Trump at all, as moving on from him in general is one of the things I’m looking forward to in 2023. But the United States has proven repeatedly that it cannot move on from ugly aspects of its history without some kind of hard reckoning. When it comes to Trump, we might finally be getting one.

For a number of reasons, my money is on Trump being indicted in 2023. While things may not move quickly enough for any potential trial to wrap up by the end of 2023, they don’t appoint a special counsel like this one to sit around for a year doing nothing. There will be an indictment, or, anticlimactically, one day we’ll get a noninformative news release telling us the investigations have been closed. In either case, we’ll know what to expect, which will be a good feeling after the first few years of the 2020s.
