Attorney AI Assistants: GPT-Driven Tools And Browser Extensions To Streamline Your Work

// artificial-intelligence-4111582_1920According to the recently released Thomson Reuters report, ChatGPT and Generative AI within Law Firms, the vast majority (91%) of legal professionals are aware of generative AI tools like ChatGPT. A mere 3% of those surveyed reported that generative AI is being used in their firms, and another one-third of respondents shared that their firms were contemplating its adoption.

Despite this growing awareness, 60% of those surveyed indicated that their firms have no immediate intention to incorporate generative AI into their operations. However, when asked if it could be used for legal work, 82% agreed, suggesting that there is potential for greater adoption in the future.

Ready Or Not, Generative AI Is Here To Stay

Are you ready to jump on board the AI train? You can start by looking into some of the tools I discuss below, which include a few of the latest generative AI software developed for lawyers, along with some of my favorite ChatGPT browser extensions. By embracing these technologies, you’ll be better positioned to keep up with the rapidly evolving legal technology landscape.

In January, I wrote about ChatGPT here on Above the Law, and since then, there have already been significant developments in the legal technology space related to ChatGPT technologies. Over the past few months, there have been releases of many different legaltech products that leverage ChatGPT functionality, and every week or so there’s at least one new announcement to that effect. The continuous emergence of these tools highlights the importance of staying informed and adapting to the rapidly changing times.

The potential applications of Generative AI in the legal industry are many, and the technology is already making an impact. Presently, two of the most prevalent methods of incorporating Generative AI into legal workflows include utilizing it as a virtual legal assistant and streamlining contract review.

In the legal assistant category, there are a few notable examples. First, Casetext, which provides AI-assisted legal research, announced the release of CoCounsel, which uses GPT-4 to provide a generative AI chatbot designed to answer legal-specific queries. It can assist lawyers with a variety of tasks including searching data, reviewing documents, drafting memos, analyzing contracts, and more.

LawDroid’s CoPilot is also a GPT-powered legal assistant. It can be used by lawyers in many ways, such as assisting with researching legal issues, drafting communications like emails and letters, summarizing documents, and translating information from one language to another.

googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-middle-300x250" ); }); googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-storycontent-440x100" ); }); googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-in-story-youtube-1x1" ); });

Another recently released legal AI tool is LexBlog’s AI assistant, Lou. Supported by the ChatGPT API, Lou is an AI aide tailored to support legal professionals in their online publishing endeavors. It is integrated within the LexBlog publishing platform and can be used to brainstorm ideas, draft posts, and turn content into bite-sized data points that can easily be shared across social media platforms.

There are also two new generative AI tools that assist with contract editing. First, there’s LegalOn’s “AI Revise,” which combines detailed legal practical guidance with the latest GPT technology to assist lawyers with contract review, enabling them to quickly revise contractual clauses. Similarly, Ironclad’s “AI Assist” is an AI contract redlining tool that uses GPT-4 technology to help users revise and finalize contracts in minutes.

ChatGPT Browser Extensions

Of course, even when it’s not tailored to the needs of legal professionals, ChatGPT is powerful on its own (as long as you understand its inherent limitations, including occasional inaccuracies and “hallucinations”). And when used in conjunction with browser extensions, it becomes even more useful.

Most of the ChatGPT browser extensions I discuss below are available for use with different browsers. However, since I use Google Chrome and it’s one of the most popular browsers, I’ll focus specifically on extensions available for Chrome. Note that even if one of the tools discussed below is not available for your chosen browser, there is a good chance that you’ll be able to find a similar browser add-on that you can use.

googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-bottom-300x250" ); });

There are hundreds of Chrome extensions that incorporate ChatGPT technology. I’ve sorted through many of them and have installed those that appear to be from reputable developers, have many positive reviews, and work well for my needs. Below you’ll find my favorite ChatGPT-powered Chrome extensions, but rest assured if these aren’t up your alley, there are many more to choose from.

  • ChatGPT for Google: Using this browser extension, your search engine queries are enhanced with ChatGPT technology so that ChatGPT responses appear alongside normal search engine results.
  • ChatGPT for Gmail: This browser extension adds ChatGPT to Gmail, so that when you open an email, it will scan the email and if you activate it, draft a suggested reply email.
  • ChatSonic: This Chrome extension leverages ChatGPT technology to automatically draft replies to emails, tweets, LinkedIn posts, and more.
  • WebchatGPT: Currently, ChatGPT isn’t connected to the web, and its database is limited to data up to 2021 only. Webchat GPT is a handy add-on that allows you to augment ChatGPT results with real-time web results directly in the ChatGPT interface. You can toggle the web results on or off, giving you more flexibility when researching an issue or seeking information.
  • Voice control for ChatGPT: This extension allows you to have verbal conversations with ChatGPT. Simply toggle the microphone on and speak your requests. ChatGPT will then respond by reading aloud the output, but you have the option of silencing the response.

All Aboard The Generative AI Train

The legal field is on the cusp of a technological revolution. As lawyers begin to adopt generative AI tools and browser extensions into their workflows, the practice of law as we know it will undergo a dramatic transformation. The integration of AI into the processes of law firms has the potential to redefine the way attorneys work, offering increased efficiency and productivity.

AI technology is changing at an exponential rate; the sooner you adapt, the better off you’ll be. Will you adapt to the AI-driven future of law, or will you get left behind?
