Could Overturning Roe Change This State’s Motto?
//
Another unexpected consequence of overturning Roe: Goodbye Garden State, Hello Choice Haven?
In a letter sent to nearly 60 businesses, [Gov. Phil Murphy] warned that an expected Supreme Court decision could spell the end of the federal protection for abortion, but that New Jersey would ensure reproductive rights regardless.
“We’re never going to be a state that looks like Texas or Georgia or other states — Oklahoma — that are going in the direction of taking rights away from people,” Murphy said in an interview with NPR. “We are going to expand rights.”
“The overturning of a woman’s right to bodily autonomy — and the chilling effect this decision will have on your ability to attract and retain top female talent by being located in a state which has refused to recognize women’s reproductive freedom — cannot be ignored,”
…
The bulk of the letters went to companies with headquarters or a major presence in Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Missouri and Florida.

That’s more up people’s alley anyway. Alley may not have been the best turn of phrase. Anyhoo. Delaware has long been a default incorporation location — who could pass up on a tax shelter with good eatin’, but our changing legal landscape may change where and why businesses home themselves. We’ve already discussed how revoking abortion access can impact careers, but as states continue to differ on things like common sense gun control (read: murder prevention) and if parents should be killed if their children are a little too in to Lady Gaga (that’s South Carolina, btw), the conscious capitalist move may well be to vacate to states that are a little more socially liberal.

So, for the sake of the people interested — corporate or otherwise — here is a quick list of states and their respective stances on abortion access.
