
Elite Firm Shrugs At Milbank Scale, Instead Offers Starting Salaries Of $235K

As pay raises slowly trickle down through the Biglaw landscape, boutique firms are taking this opportunity to flaunt their generous compensation schemes. We’d welcome this firm to the $215K salary scale, but they went ahead and blew right past it, introducing a brand new $235K salary scale. That’s even higher than the last boutique firm that surpassed the Milbank pay scale.
Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors — the successor firm to Bickel & Brewer — has paid salaries at or above market for years, and the firm is now the latest to enter the 2022 associate salary wars. Here’s an excerpt from the firm’s memo:

Therefore, it gives me great joy to announce that in the recognition of the firm’s success and the extraordinary demand for our services — we are adjusting associate salaries, including those of first-year associates to $235,000, effective February 1. Because our firm utilizes several professional groups (financial and management consultants, researchers & private investigators, and public affairs strategists), they will receive raises, too.
In a press release that accompanied the firm’s raises, Brewer also spoke highly of all the good it’s doing within the community:
Outside of its commercial litigation docket, the firm continues to actively promote its community legal affiliate, the Brewer Storefront, and the Brewer Foundation. This past year marked the 20-year anniversary of the Brewer Foundation Future Leaders Program, which lights a path to college for urban youth, and the Brewer / NYU International Public Policy Forum (IPPF). The IPPF is the first global debate contest that offers high school students the opportunity to participate in written scholarship and oral advocacy on public policy issues.
