The details: Founded by four friends in 2019, Vancouver-based Sundays Company has already amassed an enthusiastic following for its highly-livable modern furniture. For such a young furniture company, Sundays has a sizable catalog including patio and dining tables, consoles, kids pieces, and rugs, but its most marketed offering is by far the Movie Night—a modular couch and sectional line made in the style of RH’s Cloud Sofa. Like the Cloud, Movie Night is available in multiple sizes and configurations: The original has an oversized footprint that makes even the smallest offering lounge-worthy, and the more compact Condo version is a better fit for small spaces. Movie Night isn’t quite as customizable as the Cloud Sofa, but families with kids and pets will appreciate the super-comfy feather-blend cushions and the fact that it’s impressively durable. It also happens to have a much more accessible price point.

Ordering process

Price: How much does it cost? Are there payment plans available?

Prices vary depending on how many pieces you order, but Movie Night Sectional configurations start at $3,830 (the Condo version begins at $3,480). My four-piece sectional is $5,180. Shipping, which includes white glove delivery, is free. Sundays does offer a quasi payment plan option through Splitit, but it requires authorizing the full amount of the purchase on your credit card. You can also save $100 on your first order by signing up for the newsletter.

What are the upholstery or customization options? Did you choose any?

Movie Night is available in six neutral colors, ranging from a bright white (Brie) to a charcoal gray (Dark Shadow), though not all configurations are currently available in every color. Should anyone ever tire of their color selection, or need to replace some or all of their upholstery, Sundays offers slipcovers that can be purchased piece by piece.

What is the lead time for customization, manufacturing, and delivery?

Because the entire Movie Night line is modular and slipcovered, true customization isn’t really necessary. As I write this, most colors and configurations seem to be in stock and available for delivery in the U.S. within three to five weeks.

Couch delivery and assembly

What was the delivery process like?

I got my couch about a week after my estimated delivery window closed, but I don’t blame Sundays for the delay. When my order shipped, Sundays provided tracking information that allowed me to see that it arrived on time to the regional delivery service. I assume that, like many companies, the delivery partner was backed up and understaffed due to the pandemic, and in the grand scheme of things, an extra week isn’t a long time to wait (especially for furniture and especially right now). Once my delivery was eventually scheduled, the rest went quickly and smoothly.

What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?

Because Sundays offers white glove delivery service, I didn’t have to assemble this sectional or deal with any of the packaging. No packaging even entered my house! Two men showed up in a truck, and it took them about 30 minutes to get the whole thing inside and assembled. For something so big, the individual pieces are surprisingly lightweight, which made it fairly easy to flip them onto their backs to attach the clips that keep the main pieces together. I was also pleasantly surprised that this couch didn’t have any sort of chemical or new-furniture smell, so I wasn’t worried about off-gassing.

After installation

What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?

The Movie Night comes in two sizes and each has a variety of configurations, so there’s at least one that should work for most homes. I live in a 106-year-old bungalow with low ceilings and lots of small rooms, and I took a chance on the original size because my husband often complained that our last sectional didn’t have deep-enough seats. The dimensions vary depending on setup, but the four-piece sectional I chose is big: 135 inches wide, 90 inches on the chaise-ottoman side, and 45 inches deep with a 36-inch seat depth. And it is deep. The Condo version would have fit better in my living room, and after living with the original for a while, I wonder if the Condo’s 25-inch seat would have been sufficiently deep too. As for apartments or smaller dwellings, the Condo starts at 76 inches wide with a 25-inch seat depth.

Sit test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well-made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

This couch is made for lounging, and it’s definitely more of a laying and snuggling sofa than a sitting sofa. After looking at the photos online, I was sure I’d find another use for the accent pillows that came with it (I don’t like anything that’s too matchy-matchy), but the seat is so deep that I need one behind my back when I want to just sit. The couch itself feels very sturdy and doesn’t sag, but the feather-fiber blend pillows do require regular fluffing (and optional flipping) to keep from looking too disheveled. I also have to shove the seat cushions to the back somewhat regularly because they tend to slide forward, but I think that’s at least partially due to the way my kids scoot their little butts off the couch.

Lay test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?

I have a lifelong bad habit of falling asleep on the couch, but in recent years it’s been really hard on my millennial back and shoulders. A few months before I got the Movie Night, I started to train myself to go upstairs before dozing off, and I have to admit this sectional has me seriously reconsidering my lifestyle change. It’s hard to avoid falling asleep when laying down on it, and I definitely do on occasion, but I don’t have the back and shoulder pain I experienced with my last couch. In fact, I recently (accidentally) spent an entire night on the sofa after a wild night at a preschool fundraiser, and my back felt great the next morning (my head, not so much). Movie Night is both soft and supportive, and I wouldn’t feel an ounce of guilt offering it as a guest bed.

Is the sectional suitable for particular decor styles and, if so, which?

I would describe the design of this couch as sort of nondescript casual or modern, so it can work with all kinds of home decor styles. Based on its size alone, it’s a bit of a statement piece. That said, I wouldn’t necessarily put it in a traditionally formal living room (and honestly, it’s better suited to a family room or den if you’re lucky enough to have either), but context and throw pillows can do a lot for a neutral couch like this. I sometimes find myself wishing it had some sort of design detail, like a French seam, to set it apart from the many couches now modeled after the Cloud, but it’s still a good looking and stylistically versatile sectional.

Is it durable or practical in a modern home? Is the couch kid- and/or dog-friendly?

As a person with young kids and a big, hairy rescue mutt, I can confidently say this couch is amazing for families and pet owners. Every inch of this couch is padded, even the corners, and it’s deep and low enough that I don’t worry about my toddler falling off when he stands (and runs) on it to look out the window. Although the Condo version might have been a better fit for my small-ish house, the original makes snuggling with my kids (even both of them at the same time) comfortable and easy. There’s still plenty of room when my big, burly husband joins us too. At first I was worried my six-year-old kid would break the frame by walking on the arms and back, but this thing is solid. Both boys truly love playing on the couch, which is usually some version of running full speed and toppling onto it or pushing out the ottoman to jump from one piece to the other (one of many reasons I wish the ottoman were attached). But wait, there’s more! The Dark Shadow upholstery doesn’t really show dog hair, which is surprising considering my last sectional (also made of a dark fabric) seemed to be constantly covered in a blanket of tan fur, no matter how often I vacuumed it.

What are the care and cleaning instructions? Do you think stains could be easily removed?

All Movie Night upholstery options are stain-resistant, and the three lightest colors are made of spill-resistant LiveSmart fabric. Multiple reviewers with white couches report cleaning wine and coffee spills with only a baby wipe (even after reading that, I wasn’t brave enough to bring white furniture into my own home). Though the darker upholsteries don’t appear to have the same repellent properties, some small spills and splashes do seem to sit on top of, rather than absorb into, the fabric. I did have a toddler-induced coffee spill on a cushion recently, and it penetrated the fabric, but that’s why I got a dark couch! When it’s time for a true cleaning, the covers are fully removable, and Sundays recommends dry cleaning them as needed. I don’t dry clean anything and would feel comfortable washing mine in cold water on the extra delicate cycle, and then lay it flat to dry. (I’ll plan to update this review to let you know how that goes.)

Do the photos do this product justice? Was there anything you were surprised to see IRL?

Movie Night is the star of the Sundays website and social media accounts, but most of the photos feature the lighter upholstery options. On the screen, you don’t really see the depth of the darker colors. The Dark Shadow looked like a pretty flat, cool charcoal online, but I was happy to see it has a warmer quality in person. So anyone who is considering a Movie Night sectional should definitely request fabric samples—and be sure to request all that you’re interested in because when you use their “email us” button the auto-fill email defaults to requesting just one swatch. I recommend editing the email to request multiples if you’re comparing colors.

The other thing that really surprised—and disappointed—me was that the ottoman that makes the couch a sectional doesn’t actually attach to the couch and constantly moves away from the rest of the piece. Rubber furniture pads don’t do much to keep it in place because it’s so lightweight. When I think of a modular sectional, I imagine having the ability to rearrange it but I didn’t expect a free-floating section. I’m not married to the chaise functionality created by the ottoman, so I’m considering ordering the corner chair to make this more of a solid piece, but it’s a pricey addition to an already pricey couch. (There is a closed version of this sectional which has the corner piece instead of the ottoman but, for some reason, it’s only available in one color and, as I’ve mentioned more than once, I’m not willing to have a white couch in this particular season of life.)
