Updated: About 90 lawyers and staff members are moving from Seyfarth Shaw to BAL, expanding by almost 10% the head count of the immigration law firm formerly known as Berry Appleman & Leiden.

The group includes six partners who are among 21 attorneys making the move, according to Law360. Law.com, however, says about 18 lawyers are leaving Seyfarth Shaw for the new firm.

The exact number is dependent on acceptance of BAL’s offers, Jeremy Fudge, CEO of of the law firm, told Law.com and Law360.

BAL will open a new Atlanta office to accommodate the expansion, according to an April 29 press release. It will be the firm’s 13th U.S. office. Some of the moving lawyers will be in other offices, however.

Seyfarth Shaw chair and managing partner Lorie Almon indicated that the decision to leave was mutual.

Seyfarth Shaw and its immigration group “all agreed that their practice would be best positioned at a boutique immigration-only firm with a different model and platform than ours,” Almon said in the press release. “This move aligns with the strategic vision of both Seyfarth and the immigration group.”

Seyfarth Shaw told Law360 in a statement that its “global mobility team” will continue to work on complex business immigration matters, and lawyers on that team will remain at Seyfarth Shaw.

Updated April 30 at 4:50 p.m. to correctly identify the immigration law firm as BAL.
