Kavanaugh’s Neighbors Care About Abortion Rights, Just Not Enough To Be Even Mildly Inconvenienced

Hot on the heels of writing a whole article casting doubt on the existence of a 10-year-old rape victim — who turned out to be entirely real — the Washington Post offers another article of dubious necessity.

In “Brett Kavanaugh’s neighbors: For abortion rights but tired of protests,” the Post gives voice to the truly voiceless — wealthy suburbanites — who want everyone to know that they care a lot about the women risking sepsis from miscarriages, but… not enough to interfere with game night!

“The vast majority of people here are pro-choice,” said Lyric Winik, speaking on her front porch, several homes down from the conservative justice. “And the very vast majority of people here think that these protesters have gotten out of control.”

Oh dearie me! Well, if they’re out of control then surely the authorities have stepped in right? Because even though THE CONSERVATIVES on the Supreme Court declared years ago that it’s unconstitutional to block people from protesting outside someone’s home, that doesn’t prevent authorities from enforcing a community’s disturbing the peace laws.

Law enforcement officers from Montgomery County and the U.S. Marshals Service have been a constant presence during the protests. In recent weeks, Montgomery officials say they have received more complaints about noise from residents as police appear to be stepping up enforcement — complete with enlisting decibel-detection meters to document sound levels. Last Wednesday, officers indicated protesters were edging closer to being arrested.

So by “enlisting decibel-detection meters” and “edging CLOSER to being arrested,” they’re saying that the protests are NOT exceeding the decibel limit now? Because if the protesters aren’t “disturbing the peace,” what is the issue here?

Or, more accurately, what does the Post think is the issue here.

Because someone had to look at the outpouring of righteous anger over Dobbs and decide that time and energy should be devoted to people upset that people are doing something that isn’t even illegal. The article even notes as an aside that the protesters have cooperated with police to move out of the way and keep the noise down. The following absolutely devastating line that appears TWO-THIRDS of the way down the article:

“We’re there for about 30 minutes between 7 and 8 p.m. and then we leave,” Kuhns said.

THIRTY FUCKING MINUTES IN THE EARLY EVENING! Note that the Post does not follow this revelation with “but that’s not true” or “neighbors suggest otherwise.” This is the uncontroverted assertion of the story!

See, that should be the whole story — especially in a world where disingenuous actors — like a certain steakhouse — are trying to paint the protesters as an unruly mob. Point out that the reality doesn’t match what people are hearing from out-of-context reports delivered by less scrupulous publications.

An article that begins from the premise that they’ve done nothing wrong and cooperated with authorities would actually add to the public’s understanding. Note the dissenting opinions of the neighbors, but place the spotlight on the distorted image painted elsewhere.

So we got… not that.

“They just call us fascists,” she said. “Nothing about this is healthy. We’ve got kids on this street scared to leave their homes.”

No you don’t. Parents get scared about kids leaving homes. Kids will march through a forest and wrestle a raccoon if you let them. They aren’t worried about people walking back and forth in front of someone else’s house.

This once again goes to show that the professionals in the D.C. area are insufferably soft. We’ve talked about this phenomenon for years, but for unfathomable reasons, the people who choose to live in the seat of government seem to unwilling to cope with even the slightest inconvenience.

I used to live on top of the West Side Highway. I worked at Fifth and 42nd. Sometimes there’s noise in this world and you suck it up.

And you definitely suck it up if you profess to care about an issue. Unless you really just care about yourself.
