Happy holidays card with hand drawn cute snowmen

Winter is creeping up on us, Hanukkah and Christmas are nearly upon us, and everyone in the legal profession ready to ring in the New Year, so it’s finally time to reveal the NINE finalists for our fourteenth annual holiday card contest. But first let’s give shout-outs to some honorable mentions (click on each firm’s name to see its card):

1. Buchanan Firm: Have you ever seen a law firm holiday card that needs a secret decoder? Now you have!

2. Lang & Associates: From “three gals and an office dog” who just “discovered the boundless possibilities of stock photography websites and Photoshop,” we found ourselves chuckling after taking a look at this card.

3. Rakower Law: We thought this card was “SIRI-ously” cute, plus, the firm will make a donation to a worthy charity of your choice at the click of a button.

googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-middle-300x250" ); }); googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-storycontent-440x100" ); });

And now, the nine finalists, in alphabetical order. Again, click on each firm’s name to view its card. Please note that most of these cards have SOUND, so you might want to turn your sound off or down, or use headphones. Explanatory comments come from firm representatives unless indicated.

1. Butler Snow: If we’re being completely honest, this holiday card kind of reminded us of a law school’s law revue video contest submission. “This year’s card is a deeply retrospective, yet entertaining, look at Frosty the Snowman’s life had he gone to law school. Our snowman’s name is Butler, of course. Butler the Snowman.” You’re going to love the song, and you’re going to laugh at the letter this snowman lawyer tries to send to a client. Fantastic work!

2. Davis Wright Tremaine: This law firm has a little holiday spirit for all. “Everyone talks about diversity but, apart from a little menorah next to the giant Xmas tree in the lobby, who’s really showing it? Our card walks the walk by showcasing the diverse holiday traditions that some of our lawyers and staff observe with their friends and family in a fun and charming way. As in past years, this card was conceived and created entirely in-house.”

3. “Lambert & Lambert”: The quintessential lawyer’s holiday card: a threat to sue Santa Claus. We love it! From the nominator: “It’s not a traditional card, and I work in-house for a technology company (Trimble Inc.) and send the card to my colleagues and legal contacts, but I think it is a worthy contender, and the rules don’t limit entries to law firm cards. It celebrates the season as only an attorney can, shows that even little brothers can be nice (with a little help from a demand letter written by savvy counsel), shows Hermey decided to branch out from dentistry, and finally reveals Santa’s real name.”

4. McBrayer: “Our cards reflect the personality of our firm – one that will do a serious job for our clients without taking itself too seriously. We wanted to shoot a holiday movie this year, but we couldn’t decide on just WHAT movie. So we just did all of them. We hope you enjoy this sojourn through our holiday message to clients and friends as told through our favorite holiday scenes. And yes, THAT one is in there.” Yet another excellent entry from McBrayer.

googletag.cmd.push( function() { // Display ad. googletag.display( "div-id-for-bottom-300x250" ); });

5. Morse: Who doesn’t appreciate a good book during the winter months? Let this law firm help you line your bookshelves. “Grab a warm beverage of your choice, throw on your comfy slippers, and give the Morse Book Nook a browse in the 2022 Morse Holiday E-Card! Sticking with our tradition of creating a card that truly gives something to the recipient (see recipes and holiday traditions in years past), this year we grabbed our toolbelt and built the Morse Book Nook. Including book and podcast recommendations from all around the firm (staff, paralegals, and attorneys), the Morse Book Nook offers suggestions that will leave you inspired, entertained, and perhaps even well-traveled (trip to space, anyone?). Motivation for your New Year’s resolution run? We’ve got that too!”

6. Sturgill Turner: This law firm’s holiday card has really got some heart. They’re doing their best to help a community that was devastated by a natural disaster. From the nominator: “Last summer, Eastern Kentucky suffered some of the worst flooding in its history. Sturgill Turner has numerous clients throughout the region and decided to send our annual holiday donation (in lieu of printing cards) to the Hindman Settlement School, which had been hit hard by the floods, but had stepped up in a big way to help and is on its way back to providing great educational, cultural, and other services to the area. In keeping with a theme of gratitude (we send our card and donation at Thanksgiving), we decided that rather than simply talking about ourselves or about the year in review, we wanted to accomplish two goals: show our connections to and solidarity with Eastern Kentucky clients and their communities as they recover, and bring notice to all our clients and colleagues about the great work of the Settlement School. Some of the responses we received included ‘What a heartwarming video!’; ‘This video is wonderful and brought tears to my eyes.’; and ‘So thankful for you and your team for supporting Hindman!'”

7. Venable: Who doesn’t love an a cappella rendition of Frosty the Snowman? An absolutely amazing job by the singers, with captions that poke fun at Venable lawyers’ apparent inability to harmonize. “Since our founding, Venable has supported the economic and social vitality of the communities in which we work and live. By helping individuals and organizations meaningfully connect with opportunities, resources, and each other, we ensure that our firm’s impact reaches far beyond our day-to-day business operations.”

8. Waldrep Wall Babcock & Bailey: “Our firm predominantly focuses on Business Bankruptcy and Corporate Litigation, so this card portrays our firm, in jest, capitalizing on Santa Claus’ business model (or lack thereof). Tom Waldrep, the attorney ‘speaking’ in this card, is a partner at our firm and the Bankruptcy Practice Department Head. From 2004 to 2013, Tom was a United States Bankruptcy Judge with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of North Carolina — and the only judge in North Carolina history to return to private practice after serving as a judge.” His Honor certainly has a good sense of humor. We think this card will make you giggle.

9. Wolf Greenfield: Yet another quality submission from the perennial winner of our holiday card contest. Get your tissues ready — this one is a tearjerker. From the nominator: “HATS OFF TO HOLIDAY MEMORIES! Memories are a big part of what make the season bright. Whether you’re creating new ones, or enjoying traditions passed down from generation to generation, we hope you’re able to take a step back from the holiday bustle and enjoy the simple things that make this time of year so special. Like sitting by a toasty fire, flipping through old photos, or donning your favorite seasonal attire – perhaps a cherished family heirloom. Nothing makes the heart warmer than reminiscing with loved ones. Last year’s holiday card, while futuristic in nature, brought with it a feeling of nostalgia. For 2022, we decided to leap into that nostalgia even further by reminiscing on simpler times. We went pre-computers, pre-digital storytelling, to a fully handmade flipbook. How many pages did it take to make the Wolf Greenfield holiday card? More than we ever expected! What started out as a one paragraph idea, turned into a one page storyboard, then a nearly 400 page flipbook. Don’t miss our behind-the-scenes look!”

Now it’s time for our audience to vote. We’ll keep the polls open through SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern time). This gives you ample time to campaign for your pick over the holidays (but please don’t cheat).

Thanks to all the entrants and nominators, good luck to the finalists, and happy holidays to all! Above the Law is happy to celebrate holiday cheer with you!
