A consumer protection lawyer in Florida said he has filed more than 1,000 lawsuits alleging that debt collectors failed to follow laws governing debt collection.

Law.com spoke with Jibrael Hindi, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, lawyer, after the publication’s “Trend Detection” product found that he had filed more than 20 debt-collection class action suits per month since October.

Hindi told Law.com that he has filed at least 1,000 cases since he began law practice in October 2015.

Many of Hindi’s suits accuse debt-collection companies of violating the Florida Consumer Collection Practices Act by sending texts or emails outside business hours.

Hindi prefers suing under the Florida law, rather than the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, because the state law applies to creditors, as well as debt collectors.

Many defendants settle but then continue their bad acts, Hindi told Law.com. He speculates that companies have data showing that they get better response rates to after-hours communications, “and they are budgeting in their costs for breaking the law.”
