No one else had the guts to take her case. I believed we could take down a sitting U.S. president who was the biggest threat to our democracy in modern times.

I own the conduct for which I was convicted. I disappointed scores of people and failed in a cataclysmic way.

I have destroyed my career, my relationships and my reputation and have done collateral damage to my family and my life. There is serious doubt as to how or if I will ever recover any semblance of a normal life.

— Michael Avenatti, delivering a statement prior to his sentencing in the Stormy Daniels case. Avenatti was sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of defrauding his former client through aggravated identity theft and wire fraud. He is currently serving a 2 1/2-year sentence for trying to extort millions of dollars from Nike. Avenatti — who won the title of Above the Law’s 2018 Lawyer of the Year — faces a combined five years in prison (with 18 months of the Daniels sentence to run concurrently with the Nike sentence). On top of that, he must pay Daniels $148,750 in restitution and forfeit about $297,000 that he stole from her.
