Elon University plans to open a part-time, in-person law school in Charlotte, North Carolina, after the only other law school operating in the city was forced to shut down in 2017.

Elon University—which already has a full-time North Carolina law school in Greensboro, North Caroline—is seeking ABA and regional approval for the part-time program at Elon’s new regional center in Charlotte, according to a Sept. 19 press release and coverage by Reuters, the Charlotte Observer and Above the Law.

Elon University hopes to win approval in time to open the Charlotte law school in fall 2024. The JD will be offered through the Elon Law Flex Program, which “will replicate over four years our highly experiential curriculum” at the Greensboro, North Carolina, campus, according to another press release. Greensboro faculty will be teaching. Applications will be accepted beginning Oct. 1, 2023.

The Elon University School of Law opened in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 2006 and received full ABA accreditation in 2011, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The Greensboro, North Carolina, law school combines traditional classroom instruction with a required residency-in-practice field placement in which students work under the supervision of lawyers and judges.
