Rather than sending the Albany Law School in New York money, some people recently thought that they received checks from the private stand-alone institution.

It’s probably part of a scam, and the checks are bogus, according to law enforcement, the Times Union reports.

Police do not know who is sending the checks yet. The police suspect that the scheme involves asking people to cash the checks and sending back a portion of the money—to the scammers, not the law school—before realizing that the check bounced.

The number of victims has not been disclosed.

“The best advice we can give is that anyone who does receive an unexpected check from any organization should contact the organization to verify the check’s authenticity before depositing or cashing it,” Ben Meyers, a spokesman for the Albany Law School, told the Times Union.
