Wish Protecting And Serving Was Colorblind? Maybe We Need More K-9s

// dog judge

Justice requires eternal vigilance.

A K-9 cemented himself in the goodest boy running by biting his conflict-escalating coworker.

When watching this graphic video, keep in mind that K-9's are trained to attack the aggressor and de-escalate the situation. This dog did its job, which is very telling about who the actual aggressor is. Total abuse of authority. https://t.co/vh9lzEVigy

Talk about a guy having a ruff day at work. While I’m sure this will be a novel bit of conflict resolution for the officer’s HR department, the events of the video prior to the bite were much of the usual. A citizen walking around clearly not being a threat, a cop mistaking him for standing menacingly jumps on him, and his human partner jumps in to help. I think that the everyday-ness of this attack is why the officer was so surprised that the dog’s de-escalation tactics were trained on him. You’d think a co-worker that only saw in shades of blue and yellow would be the best at upholding the Blue Wall of Silence. Maybe the pup fell asleep during that training module.

While bodycams have led to a reduction in violent police outbursts, they aren’t infallible. Thankfully, the low-tech police supports are a little harder to turn off when you wanna do your job poorly in broad daylight. While the K-9 did not give a written statement for Above the Law to use, let the record show that I am sending many a head scratch and belly rub to McGruff. If their colleagues either get kicked off the force or just stand idly by as badged people lash out, I hope more dogs rein them in.
